Bye-Wart

What are warts and why do we get them?

Warts are small, hard lumps on the skin which come in a variety of shapes and sizes, depending on the type.  Warts are an especially common problem, affecting 20-25% of population in Europe and even higher percentages in some areas of the world.  Like several other skin problems, children are particularly susceptible to warts in comparison to adults who tend to be troubled by them to a lesser extent but all the same they are a common problem which leave many feeling self conscious.

Specific strains of the human papilloma virus cause different types of warts that differ in both size and appearance.  The two main types of warts which people have to deal with are common warts and verrucas.  Verrucas, which tend to form on the soles of the feet, are white, flat and circular in shape and, unlike most other types of wart, verrucas can cause a lot of pain.  While common warts are also round in shape, they have a rougher surface than verrucas and are typically located on the fingers, knuckles and knees.  Other variations including plane warts and mosaic warts often form in clusters of up to several hundred warts in an area.

Warts are highly contagious and they can be spread by skin-to-skin contact as well as multiplying, often in large numbers, when self-infected.  In addition to skin contact, warts can be spread indirectly via an object which has come in contact with a wart or flooring such as the area around a swimming pool which is walked over by large numbers of people.  If the skin is damp or has recently come into contact with something rough, the chance of a wart spreading to that part of the skin is increased.  Once infected, the warts can take anywhere from a couple of weeks up to several months to appear so it is often difficult to pinpoint the time and place that you were infected.

If you were to talk to anyone who has suffered from warts, despite the differences in the amount of pain they cause, very few would say that they had no difficulty getting rid of them.  That is if they were to admit to having them at all; many people experiencing wart trouble will do their very best to keep them concealed and undiscovered.  Nevertheless, despite the often unattractive appearances of warts and verrucas and the many failed attempts to try to get rid of them, if you find the right method, it can be easier than you think to be wart and verruca free.

Is there a straightforward method of getting rid of warts?

There are a variety of treatments available to help remove warts, such as freezing which is a method often used by doctors.  Nevertheless, freezing can be very painful and does sometimes damage healthy skin cells, leaving scars behind.  In addition, freezing is very often ineffective as it does not always freeze to a low enough temperature.

Despite the number of products out there, the vast majority of people have difficulty finding a product which actually succeeds in ridding their warts.  Instead many people find themselves going through long winded treatments which, more often than not, end up being in vain.  Therefore using the right product is very important, not only for getting rid of your warts, but for also saving yourself valuable time, money and discomfort.

TOP TIPS FOR REDUCING THE INCIDENCE OF GETTING OR SPREADING WARTS & VERRUCAS

  • Never share towels or flannels
  • Wash towels and flannels at high temperatures
  • Wear a verruca sock whilst swimming / avoid walking bare footed until the verruca is gone
  • Check your Children’s feet in particular – for those that have had painful treatments before it is very common for them to try and hide them in the fear of going through all that discomfort again.
